Success – How hungry are you?

There’s one thing in this world that has the ability to change our whole life in an instant.

You know what it is? It’s action. You gotta make a decision. Ask yourself this question: “A year from now, five years from now, what am I gonna wish I had done today?”

The secret to getting ahead in this world is first getting started. You can’t let fear stand in the way of your dreams. You cannot think “oh, what if this doesn’t work?” If you believe enough in the process and in the end result, success is going to come to you. It will. You just gotta be willing to see it through to the end. You gotta be willing to jump off the deep end. Once something goes into motion it stays in motion. The process itself feeds the fire. You can’t be trapped by fear. Limits like fears, they’re illusions. Disregard them. If you’re passionate enough about it and you go full-throttle, there’s no doubt that you’re going to be good.

What makes someone good at something?

It’s dedication and hard work, and it’s doing it with the proper direction and methodology.

But what makes someone outstanding at something?

  • It’s not talent, it’s not innate ability. It simply comes down to how hungry you are. How hungry are you to improve? How big is your appetite for success? What are you willing to do to reach your dreams?
  • It’s the concept of taking that little idea, that little decision you make, and determining to take it as far as your imagination holds; dedicating every breathe in your body to that single cause.

See the bigger picture at the end of the road and be the absolute best. Don’t settle for ANY reason.  The professionals, the best at their craft, they don’t care about the naysayers. They don’t care about the fun they’re forgoing. They don’t take days off. They are 100% set in there ways in perfecting their craft because it’s for a much larger purpose than any semblance of happiness that immediate gratification provides. Reaching your goal is pure bliss. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

What’s the difference between you and them?

The professionals, they’re the ones that are willing to knock on the doors of complete exhaustion EVERY SINGLE DAY. Let me define exhaustion for you. Exhaustion is at that very point where it’s just so damn painful that you can’t push anymore. The point where it hurts so bad that you can’t even think straight. It’s in reaching that point, when deep down, you know that you did ABSOLUTELY everything in your power, that there wasn’t one more thing you could have done.

What are you doing right now to achieve your goals?

Are you getting closer to your goals or are you getting further away from them? Are you knocking on those doors of exhaustion or are you just uncomfortable? Being uncomfortable is not exhaustion. Be uncomfrtable is your mind quitting before your body. Being uncomfrotable is just saying “no” to trying again. Achieving greatness means being willing to do something that could kill you just to make you better.

It’s easier to buy the ticket to see the game than it is to be the one to prepare for it. It’s easier to hang with your friends than it is to workout in the gym for an hour. It’s easier to sleep in than it is to wake up and go straight to work on your goals. It’s easier to go to a party than it is to go ‘Ass-to-the-grass’ doing squats. It’s easier to watch athletes from the couch than it is to be the one hoisting the trophy. But, it’s also a lot easier to look back on your life and know that you gave it your all than it is to live with regrets. Not living up to your potential, well, that weighs on your shoulders for a lifetime.

I wont tell you that being successful is going to be easy, but I’ll tell you one thing, it sure as hell is worth it. You create your own life. There is no such thing as failure. You just gotta say “No! Not this time. Not with me. I’m going to try again, and again, and again, and I’m going to look failure straight in the face and tell it that I’m willing to go through all the struggles to reach my dreams.”

Without struggle there’s never going to be any progress. It’s all about how bad you want it. How big is your appetite for success? Do you just want a bite or are you starving for it? Stay driven. Stay hungry.

Expect to get it. (What you want)

Great Expectations

I’ve eaten roughly 20-dozen raw eggs in my lifetime and have never gotten sick from it. I don’t expect to either. Does this make me an idiot or just skeptical? I completely understand the numerous health risks and reasons people will give me against eating raw eggs or meat or whatever it is. Salmonella this, E. coli that. It just doesn’t worry me. I’ve got bigger fish to fry. (no pun intended, really!)

Many people worry about certain things so much that they tend to attract whatever it is that they’re worried about into their lives. A great example – I know many folks who will repeatedly tell horror stories of how some ethnic restaurants will re-use sauces and dips leftover from previous tables. Now, I’ve never worked in any kind of establishment that would actually do that, and I’ve never seen it with my own eyes, but some people will swear that it happens! And, no joke, the SAME PEOPLE who I hear it from are the same people who get sick!

Ladies, Listen up.

Let me ask you somethin’. Do you think that thousands of years ago when our ancestors were chasing down saber-toothed tigers and throwing spears at woolly mammoths that their main concern was how to cook the meat once they killed it? HELL NO! They were hungry and just wanted to eat. Just like us most of us guys these days. (Not much has changed in that aspect.) We don’t want to be badgered with baked, fried, grilled, broiled, steamed, and all that other stuff. This aint Bubba Gump’s Shrimp we’re talkin’ about here. A hungry man is an angry man. If you want us to be happy, keep us happy by filling our guts as often as possible.

Back to what this article is really about

We get what we expect

When’s the last time you told yourself “Gosh, I’m always late…”

How about “Jeez, I can never get a good parking spot!”

Or “Why are all the snow birds assholes!?” (they are)

and even “The service is always slow here.”

I won’t lie, I’ve been known to talk negatively to myself. I probably do it fairly often without even noticing it. What’s interesting is that when I absolutely believe in something, I usually get it. I expect to get it! As soon as I started saying “Man, I always get the perfect parking spot”, I get it. Whenever I told myself “This drive will be easy”, it was, 95% of the time. It’s all about expectations.

*An idea* Start paying attention to what you say to yourself on a daily basis. When you start talking negatively to yourself, stop, laugh about it, and remind yourself that “We get what we expect.

Also… Avoid using “extreme wording”. Look back up at some of the common phrases. What do you notice about all of them? They all use extremes – “ALWAYS”, “NEVER”, “ALL.”

What do you want?

What do you really, really, really want? Physically, mentally and spiritually. Think about it for a minute. So often we focus on what we DON’T want. We often get it too, don’t we?

Want change your life? Change the thoughts you think and the words you speak – both to yourself and to others. Expect only great things.

Post image for Responsibility is the price of Greatness

Assume Responsibility

A strong character assumes responsibilty. If you want to be a leader you must assume responsibility for whatever happens -whether you have to or not. It’s like being at the helm of a ship: you are responsible for everything that takes place on your watch.

As a leader, you’ve got to own responsibility for preparing subordinates for the challenges they’ll face, and if the result is not successful, YOU have to except responsibility for not having prepared them adequately. An offshoot of the “I didn’t mean to do it” excuse for evading responsiblity is the “I wasn’t my self at the time.” excuse. I know what it’s like. Well all know what it’s like, and what it’s like is excuses. Evasion of responsibility–>acting like a child–> refusing to grow up. You can call it whatever you want, but it doesn’t really matter what you call it.

“I slept and dreamed that life was beauty, I woke and saw that life was duty…”

Most people want to be good, they want to be ethical and successful in every way; they want to fulfill their full potential but they think it’s something that’ll just happen by itself. They don’t see that there should be a concious, on-going acceptance of responsibility for what you do and who you really are.

If you want to be really in control of your life, and if you want other people to be able to depend on you and look to you for leadership, you must wake up from the dream that somebody else will handle the pressure.

Accepting responsibility doesn’t mean that life can’t be fun, but it does mean opening your eyes to the reality that a successful person not only accepts responsibility, but eagerly desires it. It means making a concious decision to grow up…to let go of the depending needs of childhood and recreate yourself as somebody other people can depend on. It means wanting the ball when the game is on the line.

Choose the standard you want to live by and follow through on it.

Choices that changed a life

Post image for Choices that changed a life

In the summer of 2011 I made some bad choices. I was an alcoholic and a habitual smoker of nearly a pack a day at one point. I was deemed ‘A.D.D.’ by both a general doctor and also by a Psychiatrist. I had a shitty reference group, low self-esteem, no confidence, no money, no job, and no prospects. My future was bleak to say the least. Although I felt at times that things were hopeless, deep down I knew that I was a bigger person than all of that. I knew that if I could just muster up the courage A.K.A. (BALLS) to DECIDE, then things would get better. Whatever I was doing, it wasn’t doing me or anyone else a damn bit of good. I did finally decide to make a change.

“Chiseled, Ripped, Cut.” If you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all. The slang terms we use to distinguish between the Adonis-like bodies of the gym rat and the regular joe. Believe it or not, the average person with just a little self discipline can also be “Shredded.” Let me explain.

Your body is only capable of  doing 1 of 4 things: losing fat, gaining fat, losing muscle, or gaining muscle. 15 reps won’t get you “cut”, and lower repetitions won’t necessarily get you buff. Looking great has everything to do with eating the right foods, getting the right amount of rest, and doing your homework. Allow me to tell you my personal story about how I gained 35 pounds of muscle in just 6 months.

This is EXACTLY how I did it. In order:

  • I changed my reference group (May 2011) You’re the average of your handful of closest friends.
  • I quit smoking (August 2011) It took about three weeks to quit for good. I was pissed off all the time when I couldn’t smoke. I hated it. I really didn’t want to give it up. It got much easier when I decided to replace the nasty habit of smoking with the good habit of drinking a glass of water every time I got an urge.
  • I quit drinking (December 2011) This was fairly easy actually. I stopped going out to bars, and I no longer hung out with people whose best quality was being able to funnel beers in 4.5 seconds. If and when I got the urge to have a beer, I’d drink a whey protein shake instead or even a glass of fruit juice. Both seemed to quench my thirst for alcohol.
  • I joined a gym (January 1st, 2012) My body and mind were back to ‘normal’ at this point. I felt physically ready to start hittin’ some weights. I found a program online called Strong lifts 5 X 5. It’s basically 6 compound exercises three times a week for 12 weeks. You start off squatting nothing but the bar. Within three months I was squatting 225 lbs for three reps, benching 185lbs, and had a max dead-lift of 225 lbs. By the way, I’d never done a squat in my life before January 1st.
Recently I started a new training regimen. I was gaining incredible amounts of strength fast, but I hadn’t been getting just the amount of size I’d been wanting. (It’s possible to gain strength and not gain size) I recently started Hypertrophy-Specific Training. I’m still working out just 3 hours a week and already seeing great results. Ultimately my goal weight is 178. SHREDDED! I’ll let you know in June how I’m doing. If you’d like to know more about what what supplements I used, check out this link: Supplement Guide.

You make the choices

Take a few minutes to digest the following idea. You work 40 hours a week, have children, and a long-as-hell commute to work. Where will you find the time to go to the gym? Thank God it doesn’t take an excruciating three hours A DAY in the gym to look great despite what those dirty rats say in all the muscle magazines. If you can find just three hours per week, that’s all you need. Most of us watch t.v. for more than that in a 24 hour period, so if you want to look awesome, you can. We all wake with the ability to make choices.

My wife Stephanie and I took a trip to my home country, Kazakhstan. It’s not a developed country like the USA, but compared to most post-USSR countries, it has a decent economy with decent jobs and is pretty well developed. We took a train to get from Almaty to Shymkent. While we were on the [...]
